Best Beachfront Stays in Arrecife, Lanzarote

The Canary archipelago has few capitals where you can swim from the city itself, and Lanzarote's is one of them. Playa del Reducto runs a few hundred metres of pale sand directly in front of Arrecife, protected by the reef that keeps the water flat enough for children and for anyone who dislikes Atlantic swell. Hotel Lancelot faces it across the promenade and was fully renovated in 2022; Checkin Diamar overlooks the same sand and adds two restaurants and a terrace. Neither is a resort, and that is the point, because the promenade outside belongs to the city and fills with islanders from six in the evening.

On an island reshaped by the eighteenth-century eruptions that buried a quarter of its farmland, beachfront in Lanzarote means volcanic geology as much as sand. Arrecife takes its name from the reef sheltering its shore, and the same black rock forms the tidal pools around the Islote de San Gabriel, where the Puente de las Bolas drawbridge still crosses to the sixteenth-century castle. Guests at Arrecife Gran Hotel and Spa look down on all of it from the upper floors of the tallest building on Lanzarote, with an indoor pool and a spa on hand for the afternoons when the alisios blow hard off the Atlantic.

Beachfront in the eastern Canaries also has to be judged on wind, and Arrecife is better sheltered than Famara or Costa Teguise, where the trade winds draw surfers and kitesurfers all year. That makes the Reducto strip the calmest swimming on this side of Lanzarote, and it explains why Hotel Miramar, sitting next to the sea in the commercial centre, suits guests who want water access without a resort's isolation. From these addresses the ferry berth for Gran Canaria is about two kilometres along the front, and the road up to the La Geria wine country climbs inland within half an hour.
